I am Kent Chen from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics at AU. I am hoping that my research on the “Inter-Subject Correlation during Natural Article Reading” could refresh your memory of me, such as my background in Neuroscience and Electrical Engineering, my ambition to exploring neuronal responses to natural stimuli, and my interest in your research.
To be honest, as an undergraduate in Electrical Engineering stepping into the field of Neuroscience, I have been following your research attentively and, have always been heartened by your findings. For example, it is truly exciting to learn that “certain brain regions are related to the functions of physical prediction”. Each time when I noticed Dr. Smith’s breakthroughs in the research topics of my interest, I know I am not wasting of my time and I am on the right track. From time to time, even when I was fulfilling my compulsory military service, I have been wondering if there is any possibility for me to make the most use of my experience and techniques in Neuroscience at AU and, assist you with developing more exciting research such as, using machine learning technique to model the neuronal process of prediction and gain insight into the computational algorithms human brains adopt. And this year, I have made up my mind to apply for the PhD program in Neuroscience at XY University, yearning to join Dr. Smith’s lab.
As a follower who genuinely appreciate the beauty and value of Dr. Smith’s research, I am truly passionate about conducting research with your guidance and inspiration. As the top-scoring PhD applicant at AU this year and, with the recommendation from the former President of AU, I am confident that I will be a trustworthy while productive apprentice.

I want to say thank you to Professor Ronald as you had demonstrated to me the work spirit a real scholar, who treats academic research as a profession, should have.
In my eyes, Professor Ronald is not only a dedicated scholar but also a real educator, who has a broad horizon of and authentic passion for doctoral education. Contrary to most professors who pay predominant attention to students’ research experience and number of publications, Professor Ronald demands much more “overall qualities” or “capabilities” from future PhD students, such as their writing, reasoning and interpersonal skills.
