On July. 28, 2016, a Taiwan name-brand mike tea “Sheer” was reported containing L-Theanine by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA). A total retail sales ban on “Sheer” followed immediately. Such a breaking news had Taiwanese panic again, after the outbreak of several food scandals. At that time, I was an intern reporter at the oldest newspaper in China - China Times. Driven by my reasonable doubt, I started retrieving all resources of information and making a follow-up .
The other morning, a phone call woke me up. “LJ, your report What makes you panic? Food or food safety standards? is splendid! Your headline, cross-national comparison table of food safety standards, and Failing in the AVA test ≠ Another food safety crisis are really eye-catching! This morning, we got 20,000 readers browsed this news already” Mr. Chen, my supervisor in China Times said excitingly. He continued: “Sheer’s public relation office is probably clipping your news now, ha-ha!”
Many media continued to report, and the public opinion had gradually shifted from “poisonous milk tea” to “ appropriate recognition of toxic food”. Negative associations with “Sheer” were diluted by these follow-ups and ultimately, forgotten by the people.
My ability to trigger media impacts through magnetic headlines like “What makes you panic?”, is the first item in my repertoire which I could contribute to your program.

The last strength that distinguished me from others is my thorough understanding of the mission of civil engineering. In the 201X Collegiate Innovative Engineering Competition, my teammates and I advanced to the final and hence won a half-a-year industry mentorship provided by the senior civil engineers from CECI Engineering Consultants, Inc. It was until this occasion that I perceived, our mentors have been influencing the destine of the entire country profoundly. In the past 40 years, they built the world-renown Taipei Metro and altered millions of citizens’ lives; they constructed the Intercontinental Container Terminal of Kaohsiung and increased the annual container-handling capacity by 25%; they constructed the Hsinchu, Taichung and Tainan Science Park and realized annual value of production amounting to 300 billion US Dollars. Their legends not only imparted me with the Taiwan economic history, but also instilled in me the upmost mission of a leading civil engineer: “civil engineering for the civilians, civil engineering for the country”
Inspired by these legendary engineers, I began to “think big” and “embrace the mission statement”. In the competition presented earlier, we proposed to build a gondola which would connect multifarious attractions, including an antediluvian railway station, the gold ecological park, a once-flourished mine, Jiufen, and a sea has colors of yellow and blue. With the advent of the gondola, the tour to these spots would become “a package” and attract more visitors. The cultural, historical and natural implications of these areas would also be better known to the public. Meanwhile, as more visitors would frequent here, the livings of locales would be largely improved. Apparently, without truly understanding the mission of civil engineering, a gondola is merely transportation. Contrarily, if we think big and live up to the “mission statement”, any civil engineering project would start serving a higher end.
